A tiny island of 156,000 people that became the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. This is their story.
— The Blue Wave
Governed by the Federashon Futbòl Kòrsou (FFK), the Curaçao national team traces its roots to 1921. After the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, Curaçao assumed the predecessor's FIFA membership and began building what would become one of CONCACAF's most remarkable stories.
Affiliated with FIFA since 1932 and a charter member of CONCACAF. The FFK oversees the full domestic pyramid — from grassroots youth leagues up to the national team — with a stated mission of creating safe, development-appropriate environments for players at every level.
Ten years ago, Curaçao sat 150th in the FIFA world rankings. By April 2026 they had climbed to 82nd — the highest position in the team's history. They won their first major continental title (Caribbean Cup) in 2017, reached the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals in 2019, and qualified for the World Cup unbeaten.
Curaçao qualified for their first-ever FIFA World Cup on 18 November 2025 with a 0–0 draw against Jamaica in Kingston — becoming the smallest nation by both population and land area ever to qualify for a men's World Cup. They are also the first non-sovereign national team from the Americas to reach a World Cup final tournament.
Their CONCACAF qualifying campaign was exceptional: they swept Second Round Group C with four wins from four matches (beating Barbados, Aruba, Saint Lucia, and Haiti, scoring 15 goals), then went unbeaten through Final Round Group B — three wins and three draws — topping the group ahead of Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, and Bermuda. A highlight was a 7–0 away win over Bermuda.
Curaçao are drawn in Group E alongside Germany, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), and Ecuador.

— Home ground
The island's largest and most iconic venue — officially the Sentro Deportivo Korsou (SDK) — has hosted Curaçao football for decades. It is named after Ergilio Hato, a legendary local player who became a symbol of Curaçaoan football culture.
Brievengat, Willemstad, Curaçao. Easily reachable by car or taxi from any part of the island. Located north of the city center, about 15 minutes from Pietermaai and Punda.
Capacity of approximately 10,000 spectators on a 105×67 m pitch. Underwent major renovations in 2013 to meet international standards. Home clubs include CRKSV Jong Holland, CRKSV Jong Colombia, and RKSV Centro Dominguito.
Hosts all Curaçao national team home matches, Sekshon Pagá (league) finals, and Kopa Kòrsou (domestic cup) fixtures. International friendlies and CONCACAF qualifiers are regularly scheduled here throughout the year.
Tickets
Tickets for national team matches and Sekshon Pagá games are generally available at the stadium gate on match day. Prices are very accessible — typically between ANG 10–25 (≈$5–14 USD) depending on the fixture. Important matches sell out, so arriving early is recommended.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere at Ergilio Hato on a big national team night is electric. Local fans are passionate and knowledgeable. Expect drumming, chanting in Papiamentu, flags, and the unmistakable Caribbean warmth that makes Curaçaoan football matches unlike anything else in CONCACAF.
— The island game
Football is woven into the fabric of Curaçaoan daily life. From Papiamentu commentary on local radio to kids playing on every corner, the game has been central to island identity since the first recorded match against Dutch Marines in 1909 — and it's more alive than ever.
When Curaçao sealed World Cup qualification on 18 November 2025, scenes of mass celebration erupted across Willemstad. The national team receives hero's welcomes at Hato Airport after key away matches — qualifying wins were met with thousands lining the streets. For an island of 156,000, football isn't just sport; it's a shared national identity and source of enormous pride.
The FFK runs a structured Coach Education and Certification Program, building a development pipeline for players at every age group. The typical "Curaçaoan pathway" involves youth football on the island, followed by moves to academies in the Netherlands — leading to European careers. The Bacuna brothers (Leandro and Juninho), both Premier League veterans, are the most famous examples of this route. PSV defender Armando Obispo is among the latest graduates.
The top domestic division, known as the Promé Divishon or Kampionato FFK, features 10 clubs in a double round-robin (18 matches each). It's been branded as the Sekshon Pagá since the 1974–75 season. Top clubs include:
With world-class beaches just minutes from Willemstad, beach football is a natural part of island life. Informal games happen daily along the shores of Jan Thiel, Mambo Beach, and Cas Abao. The island has also fielded a beach football national team in CONCACAF Beach Soccer competitions. It's a relaxed, joy-filled side of the game that reflects the island's character perfectly — and a great way for visitors to join in.
