Historic City Centre — Floating Market, Shopping, Heritage.

About

Punda is the commercial and cultural heart of Willemstad and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The iconic Dutch colonial façades in pastel colours line the waterfront. The floating market sells fresh Venezuelan produce daily beside Handelskade's famous façade. This historic district is the most photographed area of Curaçao, with its iconic Handelskade waterfront featuring rows of colorful 17th and 18th-century buildings. The floating market, where Venezuelan traders sell fresh fruits and vegetables from their boats, has been a daily tradition for over a century. Fort Amsterdam, the oldest fort on the island, houses the Governor's office and the United Protestant Church. The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue is the oldest continuously operating synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. Punda's narrow streets are filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it a vibrant destination for shopping and dining.

The Handelskade waterfront is Punda's most famous landmark and one of the most photographed scenes in the Caribbean. The row of pastel-colored buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries reflects in the waters of St. Anna Bay, creating a picture-perfect scene that has appeared on countless postcards and travel magazines. These buildings were once warehouses storing goods from around the world, but today they house restaurants, shops and offices.

The floating market is a living tradition that connects Curaçao to its South American neighbors. Every morning, Venezuelan boats arrive laden with fresh fruits, vegetables and fish. The vendors set up their stalls along the waterfront, creating a vibrant market that has operated continuously for over 100 years. It's a sensory experience of colors, sounds and aromas that offers a glimpse into the island's trading heritage.

Beyond the waterfront, Punda's narrow streets reveal layers of history. Fort Amsterdam, built in 1634, was the first permanent fortification on the island and today houses the government of Curaçao. The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, consecrated in 1732, contains a sand floor symbolizing the Jewish diaspora and houses one of the oldest Torah scrolls in the Western Hemisphere. The district is also a shopping paradise, with everything from luxury boutiques to local craft stores lining the pedestrian-friendly streets.
