The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue is the oldest continuously operating synagogue in the Americas, founded in 1651 by Sephardic Jews who fled the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions and settled in Curaçao. This sacred and serene place of worship is famous for its unique sand floor, which symbolizes the Israelites' desert exodus and also recalls the secret practice of muffled footsteps during Inquisition times when Jews had to worship in secret. The synagogue is located in the heart of Punda at Hanchi Snoa 29, a short walk from the waterfront, and is part of Curaçao's UNESCO World Heritage historic center. The building itself is a beautiful example of colonial Dutch-Caribbean architecture, with dark mahogany woodwork, white walls, and traditional brass chandeliers. A small museum attached to the synagogue — the Jewish Museum Curaçao — tells the story of Jewish Caribbean history and displays religious artifacts, old Torah scrolls, and historical documents. The synagogue is still an active place of worship, and visitors should dress respectfully. It is open Monday through Friday mornings, and visitors should check current hours before visiting. The sand floor is unique in the world and is one of the most remarkable historical and religious sites in the Caribbean.
