Before Aruba became a favorite Caribbean escape, American families moved here to build a life around an oil refinery. Their community had homes, an American school, a hospital — and a story that reaches far beyond the beach. This is the story of Lago Colony, the American-influenced company town that connected Aruba to the United States long before modern tourism. Through historical photographs and footage I filmed during my visit to Aruba, we explore how the oil industry transformed San Nicolas, what life meant for families in Lago Colony, and how the refinery’s closure in 1985 accelerated the island’s shift toward tourism. From the history of Seroe Colorado to the beaches of Palm Beach, this documentary reveals another side of an island so many visitors love.
