The Rise and Fall of Curaçao’s Plaza Hotel 🇨🇼 | UNTOLD Once one of Curaçao’s most iconic hotels, the Plaza Hotel stood proudly above Willemstad for decades. But behind this familiar landmark is a story of ambition, tourism, financial collapse, abandonment — and now, a completely new beginning. Opened in 1957 as the Hotel Curaçao InterContinental, the hotel represented a new era for tourism on the island. As Curaçao welcomed more international visitors, the complex expanded and its famous tower became a permanent part of Willemstad’s skyline. But the glory years didn’t last forever. After decades of changing operators and growing financial problems, the Plaza Hotel eventually closed in 2017. What was once one of the island’s most prestigious hotels became one of Willemstad’s most visible abandoned buildings. Now, almost 70 years after the first guests arrived, everything is changing again. The former Plaza site is being transformed as part of the ambitious Waterfort Plaza redevelopment — bringing new public spaces, residences, shops, offices and a boutique hotel to this historic part of Willemstad. In this episode of UNTOLD, we uncover the rise, fall and future of Curaçao’s legendary Plaza Hotel. 🇨🇼 Discover the real Curaçao: https://www.therealcuracao.com 📍 Travel guides, all 54 beaches, interactive maps, hidden places and much more.
