The Handelskade is the iconic row of brightly painted Dutch colonial merchant houses along the Punda waterfront in Willemstad, and the most photographed sight in Curaçao. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features a stunning strip of 18th and 19th-century buildings painted in tropical pastel colors — a tradition that dates back to a former governor who supposedly mandated the bright colors to cure headaches caused by the sun reflecting off white walls. The Handelskade is best viewed from the Otrobanda side of St. Anna Bay or from a boat in the harbor, where the full panorama of colorful facades reflected in the water creates one of the Caribbean's most recognizable images. Golden hour photography is particularly spectacular here, as the warm light enhances the vibrant colors of the buildings. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront, browse the shops and cafés at street level, and explore the historic alleys that lead into Punda. The buildings house a mix of retail stores, restaurants, government offices, and residential apartments. The Handelskade is a living piece of Curaçao's colonial trading history — these buildings once served as warehouses and merchant offices for the Dutch West India Company. Today, they stand as the visual symbol of Willemstad and one of the most beautiful urban waterfronts in the Caribbean.
