About

The Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge is the beloved floating pedestrian bridge connecting Punda and Otrobanda across St. Anna Bay in Willemstad, and the most iconic symbol of Curaçao's capital city. This unique pontoon bridge, originally built in 1888 and rebuilt several times since, swings open to allow ships to pass through — a fascinating mechanical spectacle that visitors can watch from either side of the bay. The bridge is free to cross and provides a scenic walk between Punda's colorful Handelskade and Otrobanda's historic Rif Fort area. Crossing the bridge at night is particularly magical, as the city lights reflect beautifully on the water and the illuminated facades of Punda create a postcard-perfect view. The bridge is also known locally as "The Swinging Old Lady" due to its pivoting mechanism. When the bridge is open for ship traffic, a free ferry service transports pedestrians across the bay. Photography from the bridge itself or from the waterfront on either side captures some of the most iconic views of Willemstad's UNESCO World Heritage skyline. The Queen Emma Bridge is more than just a crossing — it is a living piece of Curaçao's maritime heritage and an essential experience for every visitor to Willemstad. The bridge is located in the heart of the city, within walking distance of Fort Amsterdam, the Floating Market, Rif Fort, and the shops and restaurants of both Punda and Otrobanda.
