Landhuis Brievengat is one of the largest and most prominent colonial plantation houses on Curaçao, dating from approximately 1750 and originally encompassing 500 hectares of land where aloe was grown and cattle were bred. The plantation house is an impressive example of Dutch-Caribbean colonial architecture, featuring a large gallery spanning the entire front of the building and a widening staircase in the middle of the terrace that creates a grand entrance. On the corners of the terrace stand two solid square towers, originally built as watchtowers and observation posts used to monitor the surrounding plantation grounds. These towers also served a darker purpose — they were sometimes used to lock up slaves for punitive measures, a reminder of the complex and painful history of plantation life in colonial Curaçao. Locally, the towers were known as "casa di palomba" or love-nests, a euphemism referring to their alleged use for extramarital encounters. In 1877, Landhuis Brievengat was devastated by a hurricane and fell into severe disrepair over the following decades. The house became so dilapidated that Shell, the owner at the time, wanted to demolish it entirely. Fortunately, Shell donated the house to a heritage foundation that undertook an extensive restoration project, returning the building to its former grandeur. Today, Landhuis Brievengat serves as an impressive and unique historical venue where famous international artists come to perform, bringing world-class entertainment to Curaçao in a setting steeped in colonial history. The restored plantation house hosts cultural events, concerts, exhibitions, and private functions, making it one of the island's most important heritage venues. The house is located in the Brievengat area, about 15 minutes north of Willemstad, and can be reached by following the F.D. Rooseveltweg north and turning onto Brievengatweg.
