About

Mariposa Hidden Beach is one of Curaçao's most underrated sunset destinations, accessible via a scenic hiking trail near Jan Thiel. This easy-to-moderate hike winds through Curaçao's rugged coastal landscape, with cactus-covered hills, coral stone paths, and beautiful viewpoints overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the Jan Thiel salt flats. The first section includes a short climb, but once you reach the higher ground the views open up in every direction. One of the highlights is the contrast between the wild coastline and the peaceful salt pans nearby — especially if flamingos are present. The trail is marked with black arrows that guide visitors to this beautiful hidden beach. Late afternoon is the perfect time to go, as the golden light makes the landscape glow and the sunset here can be truly spectacular. The beach itself is small and natural, with clear water suitable for a refreshing swim after the hike. There are no facilities — bring water, wear solid shoes for the sharp coral rock, and bring a phone flashlight if staying past sunset. Mariposa is ideal for visitors who want to combine hiking, nature, and a beautiful sunset away from the crowds.

Tips

  • ✔ Wear solid shoes (the coral rock can be sharp)
  • ✔ Bring water—there’s almost no shade
  • ✔ Sunset is amazing, but bring your phone flashlight if staying later
  • ✔ Keep an eye out for flamingos near the salt pans
  • ✔ Stay on visible trails—there are many small side paths
