About

The Curaçao Liqueur Distillery at Landhuis Chobolobo is the home of the world-famous Senior Curaçao Liqueur, the original Blue Curaçao that has become one of the most iconic spirits in the Caribbean. Located in a beautifully preserved 17th-century plantation house in the Salinja neighborhood of Willemstad, the distillery offers free guided tours every hour that take visitors through the fascinating history and production process of this legendary liqueur. The liqueur is made from the dried peel of the laraha orange — a bitter citrus fruit that evolved from the sweet Valencia oranges brought to Curaçao by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The harsh arid climate of the island transformed the oranges into a bitter, inedible fruit, but the resourceful Dutch discovered that the dried peels contained essential oils with a uniquely fragrant aroma. This discovery led to the creation of the Curaçao liqueur, which has been produced at Landhuis Chobolobo by the Senior family for over 120 years. During the tour, visitors learn about the distillation process, the history of the Senior family, and the Jewish heritage connected to the liqueur production. The tour concludes with a tasting of all available flavors, including the classic Blue Curaçao, as well as green, orange, red, and clear varieties, plus coffee and chocolate liqueurs. The plantation house itself is a stunning example of Dutch-Caribbean colonial architecture, with thick coral stone walls, wide galleries, and shutter windows. The distillery also features a gift shop where visitors can purchase bottles of Senior Curaçao Liqueur at prices significantly lower than at the airport or retail stores. The free tours run Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the distillery is closed on weekends. Landhuis Chobolobo is located about 10 minutes east of downtown Willemstad and is an essential cultural and culinary stop for any visitor to Curaçao. The combination of history, craftsmanship, free tastings, and the beautiful plantation house setting makes the Curaçao Liqueur Distillery one of the most enjoyable and authentic cultural experiences on the island.
