Landhuis San Juan is one of the oldest and most historically significant plantation estates on Curaçao, built in 1662 and located between the plantations Cas Abou and Santa Martha in the island's western region. The plantation sits in a fertile valley where, early in the 17th century, maize, sugar cane, cotton, and indigo were grown and livestock was bred, making it one of the most productive agricultural estates on the island during the colonial era. San Juan is unique among Curaçao's plantations because its history is relatively well documented, providing historians and visitors with a detailed record of plantation life. One of the most remarkable historical artifacts is the slave book, which describes the pregnant enslaved women who delivered their babies in a small room on the west side of the colonial house — a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the plantation system. The plantation house is approached via a cool, shady driveway lined with towering mansalinja trees, creating one of the most beautiful and atmospheric entrances to any historic estate on the island. The driveway is so distinctive that it is considered one of the most scenic approaches to any plantation house in Curaçao. Landhuis San Juan is also notable for its six beaches that are accessible through the property, including Playa Chiki, Playa Shon Mosa, Playa Manzaliña, Playa Largu, Playa Dushi, and Playa San Juan. A small entrance fee grants access to all six beaches, making San Juan an excellent base for a full day of beach hopping along the western coast. The combination of deep historical significance, stunning natural beaches, and the beautiful mansalinja-lined driveway makes Landhuis San Juan one of the most rewarding plantation houses to visit on Curaçao. The estate is located about 35 minutes from Willemstad on the road to Westpunt, and can be combined with nearby Cas Abao Beach and the flamingo observation tower at Sint Willibrordus.
