About

The Hato Caves are ancient coral limestone caves on Curaçao's northern coast, formed over thousands of years by water erosion in the island's limestone plateau. Located near Hato International Airport, about 10 minutes north of Willemstad, these impressive caves feature spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and freshwater pools carved into the rock. Guided tours last approximately 45 minutes and run every hour, taking visitors through illuminated pathways where they can admire dramatic rock formations, pre-Columbian cave drawings estimated to be over 1,500 years old, and a colony of long-nosed bats that reside in the cave's darker chambers. The temperature inside the caves is a constant 20°C (68°F), providing a cool respite from the tropical heat — visitors should bring a light layer. Just outside the caves, a small flamingo lagoon offers the chance to spot wild flamingos, adding to the natural experience. The Hato Caves are one of the most accessible natural attractions in Curaçao and are ideal for families, cruise visitors with limited time, and anyone interested in the island's geological and cultural history. The caves are easily accessible by car with parking available on-site. Tours are available in multiple languages. The Hato Caves can be combined with a visit to the nearby Shete Boka National Park for a full north coast nature day.
