Landhuis Sta. Barbara is one of the most historically significant and architecturally impressive colonial plantation houses on Curaçao, built in 1662 and once one of the largest colonial estates on the island, covering nearly 3,000 acres. The plantation practiced mixed agriculture and maintained a fairly large livestock operation, though despite its size, Santa Barbara was not a profitable venture for much of its history. The property's fortunes changed dramatically when the owner sold the plantation to the Englishman Godden — a decision that must have been deeply regretted when the Tafelberg mountain on the property was discovered to hold an abundance of phosphates. This discovery led to a rich phosphate extraction operation that continued until 1891, transforming the once-struggling plantation into a valuable industrial site. The Tafelberg, a distinctive flat-topped mountain rising 196 meters above sea level, remains one of the most recognizable geological landmarks on the island and a popular hiking and rock climbing destination. The colonial house itself is located on a high spot, and the view over the Spanish Water (Spaanse Water) bay from the house is magnificent, making it one of the most scenically situated plantation houses on Curaçao. The house consists of a straight corner made up by two wings, with two stories and both downstairs and upstairs galleries supported by square pillars — a classic Dutch-Caribbean architectural design that maximizes airflow and shade in the tropical climate. The Santa Barbara plantation area is now home to the Santa Barbara Beach resort and an 18-hole golf course, blending the historic estate with modern luxury development. Landhuis Sta. Barbara is located at the Santa Barbara Plantation near Spanish Water, about 20 minutes east of Willemstad, and can be combined with visits to Santa Barbara Beach, the Tafelberg hiking area, and the nearby Spanish Water marina for a full day of history, nature, and coastal exploration.
