Landhuis Jan Kok

Landhuis Jan Kok is one of the oldest and most historically complex plantation houses on Curaçao, built in 1840 to replace an earlier structure from the beginning of the 18th century. The landhuis is named after the infamous 18th-century slave master Jan Kok, who was notorious for his cruelty and brutality toward the enslaved people who worked on his plantation. The dark history of Jan Kok's cruelty has left a lasting mark on the local culture — many people on the island still believe that his restless spirit haunts the house, making it one of the most storied and atmospherically charged colonial buildings on Curaçao. The central section of the house features a high saddle roof, and several ancillary buildings remain on the estate, preserving the layout of a working colonial plantation complex. The old slave bell still hangs on the south terrace, a poignant physical reminder of the plantation system that once operated here. The plantation covered 345 hectares and was primarily a salt plantation, though arable farming and cattle breeding also took place on the property. Around 1860, approximately 100 slaves still worked at Jan Kok, underscoring the scale of the operation and the human cost of the colonial economy. From the terrace of the plantation house, visitors can see the salt flats of St. Marie Bay, where flocks of wild flamingos now brighten the landscape — a striking transformation from a site of colonial exploitation to one of natural beauty. The famous local artist Nena Sanchez maintains an art gallery at Landhuis Jan Kok, bringing contemporary Curaçaoan art into this historic space and creating a powerful dialogue between past and present. The combination of dark history, natural beauty, and contemporary art makes Landhuis Jan Kok one of the most multifaceted and thought-provoking plantation houses to visit on the island. The house is located on Weg naar Westpunt, about 25 minutes from Willemstad, and can be easily combined with the nearby flamingo observation tower at Sint Willibrordus.
